The Homeschool Mother’s Journal – III

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…
Has been a bit calmer than the past few weeks. We have been having some wonderful weather here, so we have been spending a lot of time outside, a lot! The van is needing to go in for repair, so I have been homebound, no trips to the store for unneeded things (I won’t drive J’s car, I know it will die on me!).
In our homeschool this week…
We have been working on odd and even numbers. For three days, we worked on what makes a number even. Three days. Granted, we only spend 15 minutes on Math but it was a long 15 minutes each day. I think we have reached a point where Karol understands, mostly, what an even number is.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We have a birthday party next weekend, that is about it. We will probably hang around the house a bit more this coming week, as the van will be at the shop.
My favorite thing this week was…
Taking Benedict outside and letting him play on a blanket in the yard, then having him fall asleep in the fresh air.
What’s working/not working for us…
Working for us: doing school work whenever the mood strikes. We make sure to get our lessons done, but right now, it may be at 930 in the morning or at 230 in the afternoon.
Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…
While working with Karol on the even and odd numbers and watching him struggle, for the first time, getting the concept, I pondered how, when I was in school, and mostly like it is like this today, a certain amount of time is set for learning things, then it is time to move on.  I struggled with math and I was always a step behind but did really well with other things, like social studies. With homeschooling, we are able to move ahead with things that he understands but are able to slow down and work with concepts he is having a hard time grasping, we can take our time and work with them, so he understands them and isn’t being left behind.

  1. I am also really thankful for the flexibility that homeschooling brings, which allows us to move at our children’s paces, rather than leaving them “floundering”! 🙂

  2. Can I just say how jealous I am that you have such great weather you can play outside and even fall asleep?! We just got 6 inches of snow topped in ice, LOL!

We also are flexible in our schedule. I try to get our schoolwork done it the morning, but if it doesn’t happen, I never stress about doing it in the afternoon. I think of it as a homeschool perk 🙂

I am hosting a fun giveaway, stop by and enter 🙂
