Two New Links

I added two new links to my sidebar today. Let me tell you about both of them.

The first is for andwtihyourspirit.com. There you will find pew cards with the New Translation of the Roman Missal. These cards are awesome, so if you are someone or know someone who is in charge of purchasing items as such for your parish, school or religious order, contact them at 877-585-1551 or Publisher @ AndWithYourSpirit.com. (take out the spaces).

The other link is for the book “To Save A Thousand Souls“. Written by a former Diocese of Savannah (GA) Vocation Director and current Vice-Rector at Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, Fr. Brett Brannen this book is a must have for any man discerning the priesthood, parents and families of young men who are discerning, or for anyone who want to know more about what discerning a priestly vocation is all about. This book would be a great addition to a home or parish library, so add it today!

Monday Musings – Last Day of February

Right now:  It is currently 4:18 pm. I am sitting in the living room, with my feet up on the coffee table. Benedict is playing next to me, Karol is having computer time and one of the girls is stirring from her nap. The windows are open and the breeze is blowing in. It is 82 and sunny. The smell of dinner is coming from the kitchen, cabbage, potatoes and smoked sausage.
This weekend...I did my usual Saturday morning errands. I took Karol with me this time. I picked up some fabric to make a cover for the couches as they are looking kinda rough. We ordered a steamVac and hope to get it this week and will clean the sofa and loveseat, then put the new covers on. I went to the local fabric store and found a nice fabric to use. Karol had a fun time pointing out all sorts of crazy fabrics. We to lunch, just the two of us, because he had been so very good all week, saying OK instead of fighting on things. After picking up produce, I was done and we came back home.

We had a birthday party that evening and had a good time. We met a few more families and talked with people. Our kids ran around, playing on the trampoline and being crazy as kids are supposed to be!

Sunday found us at Mass, of course. The Gospel struck me and the kids were actually so well behaved, I was able to hear the whole Homily!

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you besides.
Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself.
Sufficient for a day is its own evil.”

I need that printed and taped to every surface of my house. With the price of gas going up, food prices are sure to go up too and that makes me nervous, but I must remember to trust in God, He will provide.

After Mass, we headed out to the house of some new friends. They treated us to a yummy lunch, then we went fishing in their pond. Margaret caught a fish, a 21 inch catfish. Now she walks around talking about what a good catcher she is! We had so much fun too. The kids keep asking to go back. We got back home and crashed for about an hour. Joshua then cleaned the fish while I talked with my long lost friend, Jaime, on the phone. It was a wonderful conversation, ah.

Oh and all weekend, I avoided the sorting of the too small kids clothes that needed to be done, so I did it this morning. Blah.
Some plans for this week: Tonight  there is a  prolife rosary at the K of C hall and we are all going. Tomorrow I am watching Cassie’s son while she goes for an appointment. Saturday our other new friends will be coming over, so I need to get things cleaned up a bit. Oh, pollen season has hit here. There is a fine layer of green stuff all over everything, even inside the house, so I need to stay on top of that. Plus I need to sew together the fabric I bought for the couch covers.

If I find some time for myself, I want to: sew the couch covers!

Some prayer intentions for this week: For an increase in vocations to priesthood and religious life. For peace in Africa and the Middle East. For the soul of my friend’s aunt, who passed away this morning and for the Vincent family, that they find a buyer for their house and farm.

Something that makes me smile: Benedict.

Faith of Our Fathers…

…holy faith! We will be true to thee till death.

We are all familiar with that song, right? Do you know the history of the song? It was written by convert and priest, Fr. Frederick William Faber in 1849 as a tribute to English Catholic Martyrs who died during the reign of King Henry VIII. The four verses — yes, four, did you know there were four? No? Well, you should! The fourth verse is obviously Catholic and a prayerful plead by the author for the return of England to the Catholic Church.

Faith of our fathers, living still,
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword;
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whenever we hear that glorious Word!

Refrain:

Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto Thee;
And through the truth that comes from God,
We all shall then be truly free.

Refrain

Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife;
And preach Thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.

Refrain

Faith of our fathers, Mary’s prayers
Shall win our country back to Thee;
And through the truth that comes from God,
England shall then indeed be free.

Margaret caught a fish…

…or as she would tell you: “I cectched a fish”.

From the top.

Twenty one inches!

Now that’s just creepy.

Boiled hot dogs, duh!
(When asked why kind of bait she used.)

The Homeschool Mother’s Journal

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…
We had BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL weather. We did a lot of outdoor activities, park, bikes, sand piles, and just general running around the yard. We stayed home all week, but we didn’t need to go anywhere as we have the park in our backyard and the driveway to run around and ride bikes on. Oh, we mustn’t forget the tree they love to climb.
Yesterday Joshua and I went out to our parish to attend a meeting about planning the future of our little country parish. I am very excited about the future there!  When convent, adoration chapel, choir loft and a few other awesome things are discussed as things wanted in the future, heck yeah, we have found home!
In our homeschool this week…
Oh, let’s see here, we put the math book away for the week. We did a lot of science this week. Bugs, flowers, Space Shuttle launches, and home made ricotta cheese make for excellent science lessons. I also added to our family library with two new books for Karol. Oh my, he loves reading books and sat on the couch, reading to himself, for almost an hour. I also found a floor puzzle of the United States. Man, is that thing cool. I loved watching the kids figure out how to put the pieces together.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We have a birthday party this weekend, woohoo! Next week we are having a friend over to play. Oh, we are going fishing on Sunday!
My favorite thing this week was…
Watching Karol and Margaret share and ride the bike on the driveway. It is even better when Karol rides with his eyes closed! Oh, yes and Margaret picking tall blades of grass for me and all our visitors.
What’s working/not working for us…
Working for us is being much more laid back and not pushing so much. Karol is just five, he doesn’t need to know everything all at once, right?
Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…
Have I mentioned that with homeschooling, there is no rushing around in the morning. Ahhh.

Monday Musings – 21 February 2011

Right now…1053am, 67 degrees and sunny. I am blogging from the back yard, where the kids are playing. Benedict is on a blanket, playing toys and Caecilia is dangerously close to the fire ants, the ones that bit her last week, yesterday and most likely, today. (I put the period on that sentence, moved down the next subject and Caecilia started screaming. Now she is standing over near the ant hill and yelling, “No” at them)
This weekend…was busy. We ran errands on Saturday, again. I like doing that together, even if it is crazy with the kids. We started with finding jeans for Karol. Even though spring has certainly arrived here in South Georgia, I thought it would be a good idea for Karol to have some jeans to wear that aren’t floods. We found some good deals at the store on the clearance rack. We also ended up buying Easter outfits for all of them. We found one of those four-piece sets for Karol, with a vest, shirt, pants and a clip on tie. The girls had matching dresses and those were 55% off, good deals. Shoes were a bust, so Karol is squeezing his toes into his dress shoes still, I will probably go online and find something for him, preferably all leather, so they last a bit.

We went to Home Depot to pick up some herb plants and a container. I hate buying cilantro (but love the taste!) and for years have talked of getting a cilantro plant. Well, last week, after I tossed away all but 1/2 cup of cilantro from a  bunch that I had just bought, I decided that I would buy a plant and did. I also got rosemary too. I love rosemary, I love the way rosemary smells and love love love the way it tastes! After Home Depot, Target was on our list. Joshua found some pants and a pair of shorts there, I bought two new water bottles as one of our other ones cracked. A few more things and we were off to the produce market. I just needed a few things, fresh fruit mainly.

Our next stop was to look for canning jars, for storing home made yogurt in and I got a tip that Big Lots had them, for cheap.  So we headed that way, but first stopped for Confession. We took turns, Joshua went in first while I stayed in the van with the kids, then I did. When I went in, I noticed a young couple with two kids, both under two. Since we do not attend Mass at the parish near our house, I am not familiar with the people I encounter there. I really felt like God was telling me to talk to them and that is something I do not do, ever. So, I decided that I would talk to them, after Confession. I made my confession and came out and they were gone!!! Oh no! I did my penance and left, and there they were, in the parking lot. Yes! I walked over to them and introduced myself and pretty much asked if we could be friends. Ha ha ha. Turns out they are new to Valdosta, stationed at the Air Force Base and have been here a week. So we exchanged information and I hope to get together with them soon. 🙂

After that excitement, we headed for Big Lots and bought the jars, came home, ate leftovers, made yogurt and watched Little House on the Prairie.

Sunday started with Mass, well waking up about 45 minutes before we had to leave, so we were rushing a bit. Mass had no antics of last weekend so that was a relief. After Mass, we headed home, stopping for lunch at Slap Daddy’s because the kids were mostly well behaved at Mass, burgers but no milkshakes as the machine was broken. We rushed home to meet Cassie, as she was borrowing baby diapers from me for her new one.

We met Cassie through my midwife. She as the assistant and we were the first birth she assisted! We visited for a while yesterday and discovered that we had a lot more in common then I realized! We also got to see our midwife when she stopped by to meet up with Cassie. That was a wonderful visit, really wonderful.

Did I mention that it was sunny and 80 all weekend? We had windows open and slept with them open and ceiling fans blowing, it was great.

Some plans for the week ahead: We have a meeting at Church on Thursday to discuss future planning for the parish. I am very excited about this! I also need to buy a gift for a birthday party this coming weekend, I am very excited to find this little boy a gift.

If I find some time for myself, I want to…work on sorting clothes. Caecilia’s dresser is overflowing, but most of the things she cannot wear. Also, trying to find the best way to order grains in bulk and check out some food co-ops. Perhaps butter in bulk would be nice too.

Prayer intentions for this week: In Thanksgiving for the repair on the van not requiring a new radiator. For our friends the Vincents, that they sell their house. For young men and women to turn off the noise and listen to the voice of God in the quiet of their heart.
Something that makes me smile: Karol laying on the merry-go-round at the park, watching the sky spin.

Quinoa, How I Like Thee.

I recently saw a recipe involving something called Quinoa. I had never heard of it, or so I thought, turns out it is pronounced keen-wa and I had discussed it with a friend a while ago. I bought a box at our one and only organic market here in our small south Georgian town and headed home. It sat in the cupboard, neglected, because I had not saved the recipe I was going to use it for. This past Friday, I was trying to think of something meatless but high in protein to serve to the family. I like to do rice and black beans topped with cheese, sour cream and salsa, but that is not a big hit here, “dry” has been one of the complaints filed. So I did some searching for uses for Quinoa then put together a recipe. Let me just tell you, it was a big hit.

The Homeschool Mother’s Journal – III

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…
Has been a bit calmer than the past few weeks. We have been having some wonderful weather here, so we have been spending a lot of time outside, a lot! The van is needing to go in for repair, so I have been homebound, no trips to the store for unneeded things (I won’t drive J’s car, I know it will die on me!).
In our homeschool this week…
We have been working on odd and even numbers. For three days, we worked on what makes a number even. Three days. Granted, we only spend 15 minutes on Math but it was a long 15 minutes each day. I think we have reached a point where Karol understands, mostly, what an even number is.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We have a birthday party next weekend, that is about it. We will probably hang around the house a bit more this coming week, as the van will be at the shop.
My favorite thing this week was…
Taking Benedict outside and letting him play on a blanket in the yard, then having him fall asleep in the fresh air.
What’s working/not working for us…
Working for us: doing school work whenever the mood strikes. We make sure to get our lessons done, but right now, it may be at 930 in the morning or at 230 in the afternoon.
Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…
While working with Karol on the even and odd numbers and watching him struggle, for the first time, getting the concept, I pondered how, when I was in school, and mostly like it is like this today, a certain amount of time is set for learning things, then it is time to move on.  I struggled with math and I was always a step behind but did really well with other things, like social studies. With homeschooling, we are able to move ahead with things that he understands but are able to slow down and work with concepts he is having a hard time grasping, we can take our time and work with them, so he understands them and isn’t being left behind.

Springtime in Georgia

Babies playing outside, diapers on the line (more washing), flowers in bloom, and lettuce popping up!

*Updated: We spent all morning outside. We hung up more diapers together. I think we will have to put up a clothesline the kids can actually put things on. The kids ran and played and ran some more. Benedict even fell asleep on his sheet out there. We finally came inside after Caecilia was bitten by some ants. Poor little thing, she just stood there and made her angry noises. I tried to hose her off, but she ran from me. She went inside where she sat down and happily drank everyone else’s milk. She is the cutest toddler ever!
