Television and Commercials

If I had a nickel for each tweet or facebook status I read last night that complained of the commercials and then the halftime show for the Super Bowl, I think I could probably buy a nice cup of coffee at the local coffee place today.

The commercials were too sexual, too misogynistic, too vulgar. Then the  half time show, too sexual, too misogynistic, too vulgar. Well, I wouldn’t know, I didn’t watch at all, I just checked my facebook and twitter and saw what people were saying. It is pretty sad that is what advertising has been reduced to.

What is even sadder is that people continued to watch the game, even though there were commercials that were so awful they required a tweet or a status update about the awfulness of it.

People, you aren’t controlled by your television and it does have an off button. If you find something offensive, turn off your television and send a message to the advertisers, the networks, and the world. The message that you are better than the garbage they are showing and that you will not tolerate that in your home.

Women, remember, we are the standard bearers of society. We are the ones to set the example of morality in the world, if we don’t who will?

To quote something I said last fall:

…we are called to strive more deeply to live our faith as faithful women of the Gospel! We are the standard bearers of morality in society. We must stand up to that call and live our lives our in accordance to the Will of God. We must also set a joyful example for those around us and in living that joyful example, help bring them to the wonderful teachings of Christ.

A thought I shared with Joshua last night: How many people even cared about the game last night? How many people tuned in just because it was Super Bowl and not because “your team” was playing? Why are you willing to put your soul, or the souls of your husband and children, in peril just to partake in the “biggest sporting event of the year” tradition?

St. Maria Goretti, pray for us.

More Spring in the South

Thankfully the weather has taken a turn for the cooler, so today we got outside and worked on the yard a bit. Well, to be honest, I went to pick up a five gallon bucket of honey with the two younger kids, then came home and supervised the burn pile. However, it was nice to sit outside, soak up some sun, and relax.

Last weekend we planted some seeds inside for seedlings and they’ve been sprouting!

I also wanted to share pictures of the honey I bought today. It is super yummy and yes, we will go through this whole bucket. This is our third five gallon bucket we’ve bought, the last one took us just over two years go through.

A delicious and healthy version of Coconut Shrimp!

Author: Wellness Mama
Recipe type: Main
Cuisine: Seafood
Serves: 4-6

Ingredients
  • 1 pound of tail-on shrimp (tail off will work too, they just look fancier with tails)
  • 1 cup finely shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 1 cup almond flour (I used AP)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder, salt and pepper
  • 1-2 cups of coconut oil (or tallow or lard) for frying (I used peanut oil)
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • optional: 2 tablespoons honey (so optional I didn’t even think to use it)
Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, heat the coconut oil until hot enough to fry.
  2. Wash, de-vein and peel shrimp (leave tails on) or you can buy them this way.
  3. Beat the eggs with about a teaspoon of water and the garlic powder, salt and pepper until smooth.
  4. Mix the shredded coconut and almond flour.
  5. Dip each shrimp into the egg and then into the almond flour/coconut until well coated and quickly place into pan of oil.
  6. Cook approximately 3 minutes per side and don’t touch at all between flipping them.
  7. When done, remove and sprinkle with salt.
  8. Optional Sauce: I use fresh pineapple, the cream from the top of the coconut milk and a little honey to make a pina colada dipping sauce (favorite) OR Blend fresh mango with a splash of vinegar and some olive oil for a mango sauce (pictured).
  9. Enjoy!

I did not make a dipping sauce to go with it, mainly because it was 85 here in South Georgia and I am 32 weeks pregnant, my energy levels were at zero! I did take some of the oil (after frying the shrimp in it) and put it in a saute pan, heated it, added some leftover rice and a can of peas for the side dish, not bad.

When in Georgia

Well, it looks as though Spring has sprung here in South Georgia. It’s been in the 70s for a few days now, closing in on 80 a few times. Thankfully, the humidity has not been that high, so it’s not been bad outside at all. It also helps that the bugs (save for the fire ants) are not out yet!

So we started our garden this weekend. Joshua added soaker hoses to the gardens that we planted today. This will be good for me when the baby comes, so I can just have one of the kids go out and turn them on for an hour or so instead of trying to water while being chews up by bugs and having a brand new baby in the wrap.

Here are some pictures of the kids planting in our side garden.

Tuesday Morning

image

Well, I guess if I am going to live in South Georgia and deal with icky weather for 9 months of the year, I’m going to post pretty pictures of the thermometer and our back patio on days when it is -4 in Detroit.

image

On the mend, we are. Well, Karol is still sick, Benedict has a runny nose, I am just a bit congested and the girls are fine. (well except Caecilia has been screaming to get attention lately.)

image

I made these brownies, after letting the recipe sit open on my browser for two weeks. They look good, smell great, and have to wait for 8:00pm for me to cut.

image

Not perfect, but dishes are washed, clutter is mostly put away, and there is dough rising for bread, not bad since I am still exhausted and would like to take a nice long nap!

The Florida Aquarium

Caecilia at the Touch Tank

Our last day in Florida was a totally free day for all of us and we spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do before heading home. We settled on the Florida Aquarium and it was a good choice! We ended up spending close to three hours there and the kids enjoyed every.single.moment of it. If you are ever in Tampa, it’s worth the visit.

Beach!!

This week Joshua attended a convention down in Clearwater Beach. He was there to promote The Melchizedek Project and we tagged along. (We are about 4 hours from Clearwater Beach, so a nice trip down to Florida, but not too far.

We celebrated Margaret’s sixth birthday while there. We ate lunch with one of the Sisters of Life yesterday, and Margaret was in HEAVEN.  Joshua’s schedule was pretty open, so we were free after 230 both afternoons. We played in the pool and ran on the beach. We sought out local eateries and enjoyed some nice seafood and a some really good Polish food! Last night we just had take out in our hotel room, nice and relaxing. I even made a pound cake for Margaret, her favorite, and brought it along. She loved it and was very surprised and happy.

I took a few pictures here and there, but these are the ones I have access to right away on my computer. Enjoy!
