St. Benedict!

St. Benedict of Norcia

“We must know that God regards our purity of heart
and tears of compunction, not our many words.”
Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 20

Today is the Feast Day of St. Benedict of Norcia. We have a special place in our hearts and home for St. Benedict. Our dear friend, Father Basil is a monk in Norcia, Italy, the birthplace of St. Benedict . Our youngest is named after this wonderful saint as well!

tHappy Feast day to the Monks in Norcia and to Benedict Thomas!

A House Call in 2012

Today, MyCia (as she calls herself) was trying to be a baby with a laundry hamper, a pillow, and the fireplace hearth. Somehow she managed to fall and hurt herself pretty badly. There was a lot of blood, a lot, but I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. My first check is usually the mouth, as she bleeds easily when she is hit in the mouth.  After a bit of washing up I finally found the spot on the back of her head where she had done a good job of scraping her scalp.  (yes, I was on the phone freaking out to my husband, who was on his way home from work) .

The bleeding stopped before I could even locate where it was coming from, and after doing a quick check for a concussion, I made a spot for her on the couch. She sat and talked and sang some while waiting for Joshua to get home.  She seemed fine, so I decided that we would just keep an eye on her and take her to urgent care if she threw up or indicated a head trauma.

Shortly after dinner, she was wrestling with her Papa, when he noticed she was bleeding again. We decided then, that she would probably need to go to the ER to get checked out. Joshua called a friend of ours, also the local doctor, to find out which hospital would be best to take her to. The doctor asked Joshua what symptoms Cia had told him that he didn’t think she had any major problems. Then he offered to stop by to check her out.

No really, that happened.

He said heads are bleeders and after looking at her head, said that the extra bleeding came from a hematoma breaking loose and that she is fine. (She is acting like the same MyCia that we love. She is sleeping next to me right now and I may sleep on the couch to be next to her.)

So, we paid him with two dozen chicken eggs (fresh from the back yard, of course!) and he laughed. A true country doctor now.

On Being Saints

“We are deeply moved, and our hearts profoundly shaken, when we listen attentively to that cry of St Paul:
‘This is God’s will for you, your sanctification.’ Today, once again, I set myself this goal and I also remind you and all mankind:
this is God’s Will for us, that we be saints.”

St. Josemaría Escrivá

Things Goin’ On

If this is summer in South Georgia, I’ll take it. I don’t die when I go outside. I can breathe when I go outside, I can pick tomatoes without worrying about heatstroke, my kids can play outside at the heat of the day and not be back in three seconds later!

Yes, everyone keeps telling me to wait until July and August and I get that, BUT it was much hotter last year at this time not to mention muggy. Plus each day that is “cool” means one day closer to September, when the weather really does cool back down, not to mention a lower electric bill. Our biggest one here  was last summer and it was $370. Yeah, ouch.

Other things on the home front:

* I ordered Margaret’s school work as well as Karol’s and we have dived into it. Margaret was like a kid waiting for her birthday, asking if her things had arrived yet, everyday for nearly a week. She was so proud when it finally did come. We started school again on Monday, Margaret doing first grade work and Karol doing second grade. It is different schooling two kids now. We don’t finish much before 1130, and I have to learn to focus on one of them at a time (which means teaching them how to interrupt appropriately, especially Karol).

* Joshua and our friend Day put up netting over the chicken coop so that we are able to let our chickens roam around all the time. We had a problem with an animal getting in the coop and would have to put the chickens in their hutch overnight, but now, they are set to roam around during the day and night!

From the file of things I want to try:

Fermented Lemons

Sourdough Starter

Well, now the kids are up and fighting 🙂 Talk to you later!

Thunderstorm Season

Here in South Georgia, we have Thunderstorm Season. The time of the year when all of our outdoor activities are done in the morning, not only because it is cooler then, but also because storms tend to pop up in the afternoon.  Some days it will storm at Joshua’s office (1/2 hour away) and won’t even sprinkle here. Heck, sometimes it will rain in town but won’t do anything here. (We live five miles from town.)

Today, this is what the weather looks like down here, from the Weather Channel:

(click on it, it will be clearer)

See the red dot, that is where we go to Mass, see the mouse point, that is sorta where we live. We are going to Mass this evening, this should be fun. I do love thunderstorms. I love thunderstorms during Mass too.

Oh, yeah, these storms, they don’t move quickly. I’d say we will get about a half inch of rain tonight, if not more.

(Do you see all those tabs I have open? You do!? Those are tabs with information to help promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. I help out with Joshua’s company a few hours a week and am very blessed to be able to help out!)
